Welcome to Kitale Self Catering
"Kitale" is located on a private road about one mile from the centre of
Stornoway. It is a detached bungalow of recent construction and contains three
double bedrooms (one with en-suite facilities) and a single bedroom. Provisions
for the storage of outdoor sports equipment is also available, together with
large gardens and car parking.
The large window in the open-plan kitchen gives a panoramic view over the
Laxdale river estuary and broad bay. The river estuary has a number of different
types of birds - wading birds, such as Dunlin also ducks, geese, terns and skuas
in the summer season.
Salmon and sea trout fishing are available in the vicinity during the season and
permits are obtainable from town shops. Free brown trout fishing is also
available throughout the island together with sea angling.
Sandy beaches are a short distance away and "Kitale" is convenient for the golf
course, sports centre, airport and ferry terminal.
Some facts from the name is that "Kitale" comes from an agricultural town based
in western Kenya situated between Mount Elgon and the Cherengani Hills at the
elevation of 7000 feet with an estimated urban population of about 220,000. The
main cash crops are sunflower, tea, coffee and maize and the western Kenya
national museum can be found at Kitale and the town was founded by white
settlers in 1908.
